Over 100 day and supplementary high schools across North America are teaching the The David Project (TDP) Israel advocacy course in 2009/10, with cumulative enrollment of over 1,600 students. With support from AVI CHAI, TDP has been experimenting with a parallel effort in Israel, offering a somewhat-expanded version of its curriculum in yeshivot and seminaries enrolling American gap year students. Fifteen such yeshivot and seminaries are participating in 2009/10, with a total enrollment of approximately 450 students. The Israel program is a much more expensive effort, because it relies on TDP educators rather than school staff to teach the classes. However, the theory being tested is that this model – classes taught by TDP educators to students in Israel who will return for college the following year – increases the likelihood of energizing potential activist students to become further involved in TDP. In order to ascertain whether the North American or Israel program is more cost effective, TDP is tracking enrollment by alumni of the programs at their supplemental summer workshops as well as subsequent engagement on campus.
