Leadership: Taking Time Out for the Bigger Picture

Who are some of the educational leaders advancing the day school field? I had the opportunity to meet with some of them during the recent Moving the Needle and iJED day school conferences, where hundreds of day school administrators, lay leaders, and other educational professionals gathered to learn and network. In this series, I will share some of our conversations in the format of interviews and videos describing both their work and current overall trends which are shaping the landscape of today’s day school field.
At the iJED day school conference, I had the opportunity to speak with Pearl Mattenson, a consultant at Rosov Consulting and network-weaver for the Schechter Network. She shared some advice from her experience working with day school heads about how to think about leadership decisions in a bigger context.
As you watch this video, consider the following from your own perspective, whether it’s as a school head, lay leader, or another position in the world of education:

  • When, where, and how often do you generally devote time to thinking about your work in the bigger picture?
  • What is your decision-making process for questions in this area of your schools Jewish mission as it relates to your school’s overall mission? Which people do you consult with in making such decisions and what factors do you take into account?
  • What factors do you generally think about when you are making a decision in a crisis situation?
  • Among the issues around which you need to make decisions, which do you think would benefit most from being considered in the bigger picture? What kinds of bigger-picture questions are you currently struggling with or do you feel are priorities to address?
