The AVI CHAI blog seeks to capture trends and ideas emerging from the field of Jewish day school education and its crucial work to instill Jewish engagement and commitment in the next generation. Usually, we communicate those ideas primarily in prose format. Yet, in thinking about Chanukah, we were struck by the highly photogenic nature of the holiday – which immediately conjures up images of the latkes sizzling, the driedels twirling, and the candles burning. We decided that perhaps more visual format would not only be a fitting way to shed light on the holiday celebration, but also to add to the Chanukah fun.
Therefore, we would like to call upon day schools to contribute to a Chanukah Instagram campaign with the goal of illustrating: What is the “Jewish” of Jewish day schools? Please submit photo(s) from your school’s activities that you believe demonstrate: How is your school enacting its Jewish mission this Chanukah? Please use hashtag #JDSChanukah when sharing your photos.
We are using Instagram because it is a great social media tool for sharing photos – we recommend trying it out if you haven’t used it before. According to its FAQ’s, it is: “a fun and quirky way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures. Snap a photo with your mobile phone, then choose a filter to transform the image into a memory to keep around forever. We’re building Instagram to allow you to experience moments in your friends’ lives through pictures as they happen. We imagine a world more connected through photos.”
We imagine a day school field that is connected and united in its dedication to educate the next generation of young Jews. We imagine it sharing its vision and practices in ways that inspires the rest of the community – if not the world. But, perhaps we do not have to imagine. We hope to see it in your photos!
Chag Chanukah Sameach.
