Working in a Jewish day school, you are surrounded by modern-day Maccabees whose heroic actions lead to miracles — big and small — all the time. During Chanukah, AVI CHAI and Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools are featuring stories from Jewish day schools of “Maccabee moments” when students, teachers, and leaders made a difference to surmount challenges, beat the odds, and valiantly further Jewish values and actions in our community. Together we will read them and say “Nes Gadol Haya PO!” Chag Urim Sameach!
A Maccabee Moment at Adat Ari El Labowe Family Day School in Valley Village, CA
Our school has been working with Safe Parking LA, an organization that arranges protected parking lots for people who live in their cars to park in overnight. They were looking for partner organizations who could come and bring meals to their participants on a regular basis. When one of our teachers heard about this, she immediately volunteered her time to run an after-school cooking class during which students would work with her to prepare and deliver meals every week.
Because of her enthusiasm, we now have a system through which students, parents, and other faculty members can volunteer to truly make a difference in people’s lives, and to see the impact of their actions. It’s a learning experience for our students that transcends the classroom, and gives a structure through which we have one more opportunity to live our mission. She is truly an example of a teacher-leader, as well as someone who does not hesitate to jump in and help when help is needed.
