Working in a Jewish day school, you are surrounded by modern-day Maccabees whose heroic actions lead to miracles — big and small — all the time. During Chanukah, Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools and AVI CHAI are featuring stories from Jewish day schools of “Maccabee moments” when students, teachers, and leaders made a difference to surmount challenges, beat the odds, and valiantly further Jewish values and actions in our community. Together we will read them and say “Nes Gadol Haya PO!” Chag Urim Sameach!
A Maccabee Moment at Richmond Jewish Day School in Richmond, British Columbia

When students and teachers come out of their comfort zones to help the less fortunate, they can give back to the community in great ways and form a true Maccabee moment.
The students, staff and administration of Richmond Jewish Day School have always been committed to doing what we can to improve the lives of those less fortunate among us. One of the ways we have done this is by actively participating in a week of “random acts of chesed.
As one of the activities, we work together with our neighboring school, Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy, to provide food and warm clothing to the residents of the downtown eastside, which is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. Together, the grade six and seven students and their teachers from both schools pack 700 lunches and travel downtown to distribute them to those in need.
The students are able to see how grateful the residents are and take pride in knowing they have done a “random act of chesed.”
