Working in a Jewish day school, you are surrounded by modern-day Maccabees whose heroic actions lead to miracles — big and small — all the time. During Chanukah, AVI CHAI and Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools are featuring stories from Jewish day schools of “Maccabee moments” when students, teachers, and leaders made a difference to surmount challenges, beat the odds, and valiantly further Jewish values and actions in our community. Together we will read them and say “Nes Gadol Haya PO!” Chag Urim Sameach!
A Maccabee Moment at Bornblum Jewish Community School in Memphis, Tennessee
This past August, a few Israeli families came to Memphis, Tennessee in order to seek treatment for their children at St. Jude Children Research Hospital. Our Judaic studies teachers reached out to these families to help them through their 2+ months in Memphis. We became aware that each of these families came to Memphis not only with the child seeking medical treatment, but with their other children as well. In an effort to help these families maintain as much normalcy as possible, we opened our doors to these siblings for the school days. We provided uniforms for each of the students and our Parent Association donated lunches each day.
By inviting these students into our school and into our hearts, we demonstrated for all of our other students, our school families and the entire community, the acts of hachnasat orchim (being welcoming), bikur cholim (caring for the sick), the importance of kehilla (community), and of being a mensch (a good person). It wasn’t what we gave, but rather what we received that was so meaningful. The love from these students and their families is a shining example of what it means to shine the light of Jewish values. We lit a spark in all of our students with these acts of loving kindness.
