Working in a Jewish day school, you are surrounded by modern-day Maccabees whose heroic actions lead to miracles — big and small — all the time. During Chanukah, AVI CHAI and Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools are featuring stories from Jewish day schools of “Maccabee moments” when students, teachers, and leaders made a difference to surmount challenges, beat the odds, and valiantly further Jewish values and actions in our community. Together we will read them and say “Nes Gadol Haya PO!” Chag Urim Sameach!

Maya Shore, student at Gray Academy
A Maccabee Moment at Gray Academy of Jewish Education in Winnipeg, Manitoba
This spring, Grade 7 student Maya Shore found out that her mom had breast cancer. To help support her and all the other people suffering from this illness, Maya decided to start raising money for the CIBC Run for the Cure. In the first week, Maya raised $8500! This is well past her original goal of $5000. When the fundraising drive was completed, Maya raised $11,597! She raised more than anyone else online. Altogether, her team which is made up of friends and community members raised $21,826.
She spoke to CBC Manitoba on Information Radio about her fundraising endeavor. Way to go, Maya! You can also read about this amazing project here: https://www.cbc.ca/…/mani…/cancer-run-for-the-cure-1.4808564
